Six arrested for Philippi East assault

Over the month-end weekend, cases of assault and drunk driving predictably increased - in one incident, LEAP officers intervened and arrested six suspects for sexual assault.
LEAP officers were flagged down in Philippi East at approximately 01:30 on 1 June 2025, by a woman who alerted them to an incident of sexual assault.
They responded immediately, and arrested six suspects under a bridge next to Stock Road - the two victims positively identified the suspects.
Some of the suspects resisted arrest, resulting in damage to the Law Enforcement vehicle. They were detained at Philippi East SAPS.
'This is a horrific incident, but sadly not uncommon. I am very relieved that our officers were on hand to intervene. We hope that the survivors will receive the necessary care and support and that justice will come swiftly. Too often, cases of sexual assault and violence go unpunished, so where arrests are made, we owe it to the survivors to investigate the cases quickly and effectively, and put those responsible behind bars,' said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.
In general enforcement efforts over the past week, Law Enforcement officers made 131 arrests and issued 7 986 notices for various offences.
Traffic Officers doubled their number of arrests in the past week, taking 53 suspects into custody - 39 for drunk driving, two for reckless and negligent driving and a dozen more on various charges.
They recorded 39 966 offences, impounded 201 public transport vehicles and executed 1 264 warrants of arrest.
The Public Emergency Communication Centre (PECC) recorded 1 558 incidents over the weekend, including 120 cases of assault, 47 of domestic violence, 63 motor vehicle and pedestrian vehicle accidents and 258 noise complaints.
Metro Police officers arrested 53 suspects, including six for driving under the influence of alcohol.
They also issued 2 139 fines for various traffic and by-law transgressions.
